Come Friday /Saturday. It is a treat of music shows and it is a tough challenge to choose which one to see. (ofcourse Sunday is for AR Rahmans blessed Oooh La la la).We have the Sa Re Ga Ma challenge in Zee TV, Indian Idol in Sony and Voice of India in Star plus. Thankfully Indian idol is at 9 and hence it reduces the the effort on the remote to  two channels and can be managed with the jump button:) .

As we are getting close to our 60th Independence day, atleast two of the channels have independence as the theme for this weeks program. I have been following Indian Idol for a long time now but started following Sa Re Ga Ma and Voice of India only recently.

Indian Idol is one of the highly hyped up programs. It is also a program where emotions flow a lot more than its counterpart programs. With 7 contestants and one eliminated this week, the stage is now between 6 finalists. Two of them are girls and four are guys. It was very sad to see Deepali being voted out today. I definitely thought she was a winning material. I personally felt Ankita should have been voted out. Her voice quality is the lowest(amongst the 7) while her performance is fantastic. Infact this week she missed a beat as well as her sur ( I am using the judges term here πŸ˜‰ was flat. Deepali has been consistently good. But what I really liked today was the spirit of this young girl Deepali. She is probably the first contestant who did not show emotions but was very sportive even though she was voted out. Anu Malik (I am refraining from commenting on the judges especially Anu Malik and Alisha) infact mentioned he was going to sign her for a song soon. That was great. Lets see how the other other contestants fare over the next few weeks. One thing which I hate in these programs is voting system and not sure about the verity of the same. That’s a money spinner. Anyway, lets forget it for now.

Now let me move over to Sa Re Ga Ma. I started watching this recently after looking at a video in one of the blogs. I started liking this program to a great extent except for the fact that Himesh is one of the judges. There is not much hype in this program and the quality is pretty good.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Kapil Dev as one of the special judges today. Why of all the people Kapil is a question but then I thought it must be because of his post as Chairman of ICL promoted by Zee. Fair enough. It was actually little funny watching Kapil wearing the headphones, very keen listening to the songs, his expressions etc. However it was nice to see him there and all the judges respected his comments. Rightfully so.

The very nice part of this program is a few contestants from Pakistan too. What a wonderful thought to get people from across the border while tensions are always high at the border (tensions are high within Pakistan itself for Musharaf is a different story).

There is a girl Mouli Dave from Houston, USA who sings quite well. She is an awesome performer too. Today she wasn’t quite good both in terms of voice and feel. The best part of Sa Re Ga Ma is this amazing guy called Raja Hassan from Bikaner. He has a deadly voice and can mesmerize us with his songs. This week being the independence day special he sang “Vande Mataram”. He was simply fantastic. While it cannot be compared to the voice of Rahman he sang it so well that the whole audience wanted him to render it again and some of the judges came and sang with him. It was also a very clever choice, given that this song is so magnetic and is possibly a favorite for millions of Indians. This my most favorite song and no wonder it plays in my car most of the times as well as it is my hello tune. Going by what things are right now, it is quite possible that Raja might win the Sa Re Ga Ma challenge.

The Star Plus Voice of India was also quite decent. I did listen to most of the singers and liked Abhilasha, Abhaas and Arshpreet. The guy Abhaas was pretty good. There was this girl called Mirande who wasn’t given marks / ratings by the judges but dint understand why.!!

So it has been a musical weekend. In terms of quality of contestants comparing these three programs I think Sa Re Ga Ma contestants would win hands down. Every one of them. Following this would be Indian Idol and then would be Voice of India. My vote would be for Raja across programs (though I still have some emotional attachment with the Indian Idol contestants) and the next few weeks will let us know who win these programs. Nevertheless, we have some wonderful music stuff packed for the weekends especially all the programs reaching the final stages.

    ya truly wonderful shows…
I think you should also watch the show named ‘Little masters’ in Jaya TV. Exclusively for kids – this program really rocks. I wonder at the amount of talent and versatility these kids have. Friday night for the songs episode and Saturday night for the dance – sure you would love watching these shows πŸ™‚

Great to see one more person wasting weekends the way that I do! I love Zee Saregamapa. The line up of contestants is one of the best that I have seen. You have mentioned Raja. He is brilliant, but in my opinion Mussarrat (spelling?) and Amanat are equally brilliant, if not better. VOI has equally good contestants, but the joker judges spoil the whole show.

The emphasis on a “whole performance” makes Indian Idol a pretty superficial show. I think the contestants pale in comparison with Zee’s show and VOI. There is way too much emphasis on dance, expressions, facing the camera, that the contestants forget that this is a singing talent show.

    My favorites:

    Zee SaReGaMaPa – Mussarrat, Raja
    VOI – Toshi
    Indian Idol – Emon

Here’s to wasting more time in front of TV!

heey Srini.. welcome to my blog.. isnt it better to watch these music shows than those soap operas on infidelity, treason, betrayal, backstabbing, sentiments etc..?
coming to the point, SaReGaMaPa is really good and the quality of contestants tooo good.. I missed this weeks episode and haven’t been able to catch up with youtube also…
