To be or not to be

I have been reading several news, blogs, opinions, reviews, comments on the verdict on Sunjay Dutt by the TADA court. There is so much hue and cry from Bollywood that the judgement is harsh. The latest is the support from the the Information and Broadcasting minister.

Personally, I am still unable to come to a conclusion whether the judgement is right or not.

The faintest link to terrorism and the gruesome act of killing so many innocent people by ANYONE needs to be viewed seriously and castigated.

The simple reason every one(including me) is talking about this is because he is Sanjay Dutt. There are about 100 people in the case who are all convicted and we kept to ourselves. So Sanjay Dutt has impacted the mass with his movies.

The question is what did Sanjay Dutt do?

He purchased arms from the mafia and attended a dinner with the underworld. Again there is no clue of how this underworld operates and why did Sanjay Dutt buy the arms and attend dinner. Did he do it voluntarily with a motive? or was he forced by the underworld to do this?

Sanjay Dutt has indeed done a great deal by impacting several people with his Munnabhai. He has been so nice as a human being as well ever since he underwent the first stint of 16 months in jail.(may be even right through)

If he did the crime of buying arms with an intention of causing damage, 6 years is just not enough.

If he has been forced and drawn into this without his consent, should he be punished? I really don’t know.

In any act related to terrorism (as in the case of Dr Haneef as well) I am reminded of a saying in Tamil – Paambunnu Thandavum Mudiyathu, Pazuthanu Mithikavum Mudiyathu (You cant jump over it thinking it is a snake nor you can stamp it thinking it is a rope).

So, should Sanjay Dutt go to Jail?

I am sort of in a dilemma too. On the one hand, Sanjay Dutt, post his initial imprisonment, has been a model citizen. On the other hand, we live in a country where justice deals differently with people who have fame and money and those who dont.

So is the judge making a statement of sorts by this sentence? I dont know. But did Dutt possess arms given by terrorists/underworld dons. Yes. Indisputably.

You are right. It’s a hard one to decide. One wishes it was somebody more unpleasant who the judge was sentencing. Salman Khan perhaps πŸ™‚

Whatever it is, He had been utilised or involved in the bombing..right? So he have to be punished. If he have been “utilised”, then we can call that as his fate and not this punishment.

@sami: yes.. you are right and I tend to agree..Only because of his movies(moreso bringing the gandhigiri perspective) people have got a soft corner for him.. I definitely agree that is not sufficient.. who ever it is.. ought to be punished..but the mind does seem to have some soft corner.. πŸ™‚
